about

Best experienced on headphones.

This was recorded for #Reveil2020, the global live dawn chorus stream that takes place on the first weekend of May to celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day. I was up at 3am to journey down to Durham Cathedral and set up for my contribution.

I wanted to try and capture the ambiance of the narrow cobbled streets and imagine what it might have been like to experience the dawn chorus when Durham's medieval city walls were constructed, around 12th Century.

This mix has been spliced to within 10 minutes and rendered binaurally from an original ambisonic microphone capture (in this case, a CoreSound Tetramic).

Notable parts of the recording:
00:00 - cats fighting, from the get go!
00:30 - the 4:30am bells of the Cathedral
01:55 - the night porter of St Chad's College doing his rounds
02:15 - i love the sound of the gulls echoing through the streets
04:14 - i transition from Bow Lane to Dun Cow Lane. Hear the difference?
05:50 - the corvids are out. I've recorded jackdaws and crows many times around here!
07:45 - the Cathedral bells chiming 6am.
